Minor surgical procedures

Surgical removal of verrucae

Surgical removal of stubborn or painful verrucae offers patients the choice to finally be pain-free. Specifically for adults only, full thickness removal is performed under local anesthesia will require specific aftercare and may require the use of a surgical boot.

It is important you discuss your options with your Podiatrist, and note you will not be able to drive for several hours after treatment and will need to keep off your feet as much as possible for the first few days, depending on where on your foot your verruca was.

Verrucae needling

Falknor`s needling procedure is an innovative and effective treatment for verrucae. It is a form of soft tissue therapy which is intended to break down the verruca and create a controlled inflammatory response which, in turn, stimulates the body’s immune system to recognise the virus and destroy it. The treatment has been around for over 45 years (being first described in a medical journal in America in 1969) and is used routinely with great success by practitioners internationally.

Needling is different from most other treatment modalities (such as caustics, which can entail dozens of applications to be effective) as it only requires one, or occasionally two, applications making this an ideal treatment for busy people. Thie procedure is painless as it involves the use of local anesthetic.

Toenail procedures

Winograd

This procedure is used to treat an ingrown toenail after multiple attempts to treat an ingrown toenail have proven unsuccessful due to painful regrowth accompanied by hypergranulation tissue. It is an invasive out-patient procedure where the surgeon makes a soft-tissue incision shaped like a ‘D’ to remove the offending nail spicule after multiple failed partial nail avulsion procedures using phenol have been carried out.

Zadik (Fowlers technique)

A total nail removal, plus removal of the nail matrix where nail plate cells originate from. This is to be done after conservative treatment using phenolisation has failed and the offending nail has grown back. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and does not require phenolisation because the matrix will be removed.

Skin lesions

Other minor corns and skin tags may be removed during an out-patient appointment.
